EXPORTS OF SQUID AND OCTOPUS TO INCREASE 15% IN 2023

AsemconnectVietnam – Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports in January of 2023 were estimated at 65.8 million USD, up by 4% over the same period of 2022.

It is forecasted that for the whole year of 2023, the exports of this item will reach about 875 million USD, 15% increase compared to 2022.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, the forecasted positive growth for squid and octopus exports in 2023 is due to the stable demand from the South Korean and Japanese markets. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has not ended, which will continue to reduce the domestic production of South Korea and Japan as well as the output of the main suppliers for these two markets such as Morocco and Peru in year 2023.
Circular No. 06/2022 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development removing quarantine for frozen seafood imported for processing, processing, and export will continue to help squid and octopus businesses diversify their raw material sources in the year 2023. Vietnam’s instant, convenient and affordable processed squid and octopus products will continue to be popular in the context that world consumers continue to face inflation and a stagnant economy in the year 2023.
However, the growth rate of squid and octopus exports in 2023 is not expected to be as high as in 2022 (with an increase of 25%) because businesses continue to face challenges in terms of raw materials and input costs for the production, the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict disturbing global trade, soaring gasoline prices, IUU yellow cards and global inflation.
In 2022, Vietnam’s squid and octopus exports reached nearly 763 million USD, an increase of 25% compared to 2021. The increase in export value of squid and octopus in 2022 is also influenced by factors such as increased transportation prices plus increased transportation costs with exchange rate fluctuations.
Vietnam’s squid and octopus products are exported to 63 markets. The top 10 single largest importers of squid and octopus in Vietnam include South Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Italy, the United States, Malaysia, Israel, Spain, and Taiwan, accounting for 92% of the country’s total exports of squid and octopus.
In 2022, the exports of squid and octopus to major markets increased. In the structure of Vietnam’s main import markets for squid and octopus in 2022, the proportion of CPTPP, China and EU markets increased while the proportion of South Korea and Thailand decreased. Japan and China are still the leading import markets for squid while South Korea and Japan are the two largest import markets for Vietnam’s octopus.
