When Vietnam’s main export seafood products, which are shrimp, pangasius and tuna, simultaneously recorded a double-digit decrease (-36%, -41% and -33%), dried fish exports were considered a bright spot in the picture of seafood exports in early 2023.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first four months of the year, Vietnam’s dried sea fish exports earned nearly $78 million, up 33 percent over the same period last year. The two most popular types of Vietnamese dried fish today are anchovies and yellow snapper. In which, anchovies accounted for 66%, yellowfish accounted for 14%.
The top 5 markets for Vietnam’s dried fish consumption in the first four months of 2023 are China (56%), Russia 17%, Malaysia 8%, Hong Kong (China) 4% and South Korea 3%. . Except for the Malaysian market, which recorded a decrease, other markets increased their import value over the same period in 2022, of which China increased by 72%, the Hong Kong market increased by 59%…
In addition, many other markets also increased imports of Vietnamese dried fish such as Taiwan (China) by 45%, Romania by 90%, Australia by 10%, Lithuania by 61%.
According to VASEP, in an inflationary environment, consumers have changed their habits when prices affect their buying behavior, fresh/raw products are gradually being replaced by dry and canned goods.
Therefore, the current seafood suppliers, in addition to the pressure to adjust prices to make them attractive, must also pay attention to increasing services for products to stimulate demand. For example, with fish products, many distributors around the world are focusing on providing fish that has been cut into pieces, pre-seasoned, ready-to-eat or pre-packaged with spices and processing instructions…
Over the past time, Vietnamese seafood enterprises have been very flexible in adjusting production and business plans, adjusting product structure and export markets in line with the development of 2023. Many businesses have been active. participate in international fairs to find customers, promote consumption, promote Vietnamese seafood products…
However, to have the desired export results depends on market demand and production stability of the domestic seafood industry. Therefore, VASEP believes that it is necessary to support and accompany the Government and State agencies with suitable and favorable mechanisms and policies. From there, farmers – fishermen and businesses can rest assured to maintain production, ready raw materials when the market has demand.
