EXPORT OF DRIED FISH, CANNED FISH ‘ON THE THRONE’

According to the latest data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 5 months of 2023, key seafood products still decreased in export turnover, but dried fish and canned fish increased compared to before.

On May 30, talking with Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Truong Dinh Hoe – general secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) – explained why dried fish and canned fish “won the throne”. Mr. Hoe said that the consumption trend has been changed by inflation. Leading consumers to change their habits, prices dominate the measurements in consumption. Meanwhile, an enterprise specializing in exporting dried anchovies in Phu Yen said that in the past, the company used to export shrimp but could not compete with other countries, losing money should switch to dried anchovies. “Initially, importers of anchovies from Korea, China, and Taiwan bought finished dried anchovies for processing, packaging and labeling them for consumption, or exported to a third country, the US.

From the beginning of the year to now, the consumption trend has changed, and more orders have been observed because countries have increased processing of canned goods and dried fish in cans. We process and export ourselves, which is beneficial and has very high value,” said a representative of this business. According to the latest data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 5 months of 2023, seafood reached 3.47 billion USD, down 25.9%. At the same time, seafood exports to key markets continued to fall deeply, such as the US, EU, China, and Korea, all of which fell sharply; The biggest decrease was the US market by more than 50%. Exports with a large decrease were pangasius, shrimp, tuna, squid, and octopus. As a bright spot in the picture of seafood exports; Dried fish, canned fish recorded higher export turnover compared to the same period in 2022. Data from VASEP shows that in April 2023, exports of dried marine fish of all kinds increased by 65%, reaching nearly $26 million. Accumulated in the first 4 months of the year, this product has earned nearly 78 million USD, up 33% over the same period last year. The two most popular types of Vietnamese dried fish today are anchovies and yellow snapper. In which, anchovies accounted for 66%, yellowfish accounted for 14%. The five markets that consume the most dried fish in Vietnam are China, Russia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and South Korea.
