THE TRADE SURPLUS IN AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND FISHERIES INCREASED NEARLY 100% OVER THE SAME PERIOD

The total export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fishery products nationwide in the first quarter of 2024 is estimated to reach 13.53 billion USD, up 21.8% over the same period in 2023; Trade surplus is 3.36 billion USD, an increase of 96.5% over the same period in 2023.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the first 3 months of 2024, agriculture still achieved good growth; Productivity and output of many key products increased, ensuring sufficient supply of food and essential goods, contributing to the overall growth of the country’s economy. Accordingly, the first quarter of 2024 is estimated to reach 2.9 – 3% compared to the same period in 2023; of which cultivation increased by 2.02%; livestock increased by 4.34%, aquaculture increased by 3.46%; Forestry increased by 4.11%.

Total export turnover of AFF exports in March 2024 is estimated to reach 4.85 billion USD, an increase of 6% compared to March 2023, bringing the total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 3 months of 2024 to 13.54 billion USD, an increase of 21.8% over the same period in 2023. Of which, the export value of agricultural products reached 7.46 billion USD, an increase of 31.1%; livestock product export value reached 113 million USD, an increase of 4.8%; seafood export value reached 1.86 billion USD, up 1.9%; Forest product export value reached 3.61 billion USD, an increase of 18.8%; The export value of production inputs reached 481 million USD, an increase of 8.3%; Salt export value reached 1.2 million USD, an increase of 5.5%.

Regarding the market, the total value of Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry and fishery exports in the first 3 months of 2024 to regional markets is estimated to increase. Of which, exports to the Americas reached 2.96 billion USD, an increase of 27.2%; Africa reached 192 million USD, up 21.6%; Europe reached 1.85 billion USD, up 34.8%; Asia reached 6.27 billion USD, up 16.6% and Oceania reached 188 million USD, up 22.9%.

The market share of Vietnam’s AFF exports to regions in the first 3 months of 2024 is as follows: Asia accounts for 46.3%; America accounts for 21.8%; Europe accounts for 13.7%; Oceania accounts for 1.4%; and Africa accounts for 1.4%14.

Famously demanding markets with many strict standards and very high quality requirements such as China, the United States and Japan continue to be Vietnam’s three largest export markets for AFF products. In the first 3 months of 2024, export value to the Chinese market accounts for 20.2%, an increase of 18.3%; The United States accounts for 19.9%, up 28.3% over the same period in 2023, and Japan accounts for 7%, up 4.6%.

In the first 2 months of 2024, Japan, the United States and China are the three main export markets of Vietnamese seafood, accounting for 46.9% of the total seafood export value. Seafood export value increased in all 15 main export markets, with the strongest increase in the Russian market, up 77.5%. The seafood export value in March 2024 is estimated to reach 653 million USD, bringing the total seafood export value in the first 3 months of 2024 to 1.86 billion USD, up 1.9% over the same period in 2023.

The trade balance of Vietnam’s AFF industry in the first 3 months of 2024 is estimated to reach a surplus of 3.36 billion USD, an increase of 96.5% over the same period last year. In terms of product groups, forestry products, aquatic products and agricultural products are the three product groups with the trade balance in the first 3 months of 2024 in a surplus state. Specifically, the forest products group is estimated to have a surplus of 3.07 billion USD, an increase of 20.3% over the same period in 2023; The seafood group had a surplus of 1.23 billion USD, an increase of 5.2% and the agricultural product group had a surplus of 1.01 billion USD, an increase of 660%.

Despite achieving good results in the first quarter, at the regular press conference for the first quarter of 2024 on April 1, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that the industry is still subject to unpredictable impacts of change. Climate, weather, and diseases on crops, livestock, and fisheries are still complicated. Processed and deeply processed agricultural products are still a problem for the industry. The main export markets are still the US, China, EU…

According to Deputy Minister – Phung Duc Tien, restructuring the industry must still respect the three product axes: national, regional and local. Through this, it helps create raw material areas associated with processing, promoting multi-value integration in agricultural, forestry and fishery products; shifting from the agricultural supply chain to developing commodity chains. Along with that, promoting trade promotion, the industry will have a favorable year of exporting agriculture, forestry and fishery products, achieving the target assigned by the Prime Minister to the industry of 54 – 55 billion USD.

In food safety and quality management (food safety), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the rate of monitored agricultural, forestry and fishery food samples met the requirements of 99.6%, an increase of 2.1%. compared to the same period last year. The rate of production and business establishments certified to be eligible to ensure food safety reached 99.4%, down 0.2; The rate of AFF production and business establishments signing a commitment to comply with food safety regulations reached 92%, an increase of 3%.

Implement the Plan to ensure quality, food safety, increase processing and market development in 2024 and organize a Conference to deploy the Plan; Urge localities to strictly implement the Directive on strengthening food safety control in seafood production and business for domestic consumption and export.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is also completing documents and submitting to the Prime Minister the project “Developing a logistics system to improve the quality and competitiveness of Vietnamese agricultural products by 2030, with a vision to 2050”. The Ministry is also directing localities to build and develop a safe food supply value chain, ensuring the supply and quality of AFF products to consumers nationwide; To date, there are 2,510 chains controlled and maintained. Coordinate with localities to strengthen inspection and control of food safety, especially at wholesale markets and business establishments.
